City of Lecce

The birth of the city of Lecce can be traced back to a time earlier than that of Rome, putting its roots in old messapica already. As proof of his growing social, economic and artistic, during the rule of the Romans, Lupiae showed the remains of Port Hadrianic (Marina di San Cataldo), the Amphitheater and the Theater. as regards the High Middle Ages, it was not aware of local events that characterized this period in Lecce. its revival, however, can be dated back to Norman, who founded the County of Lecce donating to the City numerous works of art such as the Cathedral and the Church of SS. Nicoḷ and Cataldo. XV secoloil domain in the county goes to the people of the Angevins becoming the home of painters, sculptors, goldsmiths that embellish the city. Subsequently took over the Aragonese and with them (the last decades of the fifteenth century) periods were also characterized by sad sprinkled epidemics, of sloth and devastation. The importance of Lecce showed itself again in the'500 and thanks to the fact that the city became the seat of power of the regional offices of the State and the Court, so that Charles V proclaimed the capital of Puglia decided to beautify through a series of works government that led to the renovation and decoration of the same. Since the end of'500 in early'700 begins what will be called the era of Baroque born thanks to the work of stonemasons who lace, twisted, embellished, encouraged by the presence in the area of rock characterized by a particular malleability. Since then, the Salento, with its Baroque style, began to electrocute thanks to the original, autonomous, and ritrovari of contdini and religious connotations, with the exaltation of feeling and faith. Today, as yesterday, the singular spectacle is still present and will always be alive in those who can appreciate all this.

Paisiello Theater

The original nucleus of Paisiello theater was inaugurated in 1758 in honor of the musician tarantino Giovanni Paisiello. In 1867 it was donated to the town of Lecce, who held the cultural dell'arena unfit for intellectuals of the city so order its total reconstruction.

Teatro Paisiello was reopened, and then, in 1870, simultaneously with the national celebrations for the birth of the capital of Italy. From an artistic point of view can be admired in the peristyle marble busts of Giovanni Paisiello and Leonardo Leo, Salentine important musician, originally from San Vito dei Normanni. Closed for Renovations in the last decade of the twentieth century, is currently a theater major and most active in the province of Lecce.
